What is Positive Behaviour Support?
What is positive behaviour support?
Some behaviours are a form of communication, but the message is sometimes difficult to understand.
People who have difficulty communicating or understanding their responses to situations can sometimes develop ways of coping and trying to get their needs met. In the worst case this can lead to injury of themselves or others. Sometimes these behaviours can also be socially intrusive or unacceptable and reduce people’s ability to participate in social activities. These behaviours are commonly called challenging behaviours or behaviours of protest and they can lead to social disengagement or use of restraints or punishments to try and resolve the behaviours.
Positive Behaviour Support is a framework that is based on adopting a positive approach towards supporting people who are using behaviours to communicate. We do not use or endorse any sort of punitive or punishment based approaches to the management of behaviour. We start by analysing the behaviour, so we can understand what a person is trying to communicate. Then identify areas of possible skills development or environmental strategies that can be used to assist individuals to develop more socially acceptable ways of communicating their needs, wants and thoughts.
At Mindful Innovative Action we use a person centred, trauma informed framework, which means that we place the person at the centre of our practice. Working with individuals, the people who are important to them and their support team to develop plans, training and responses that meet the individual needs of the client.
